Watford Museum presents...
Goal-den Years
A celebration of the history of Watford Football Club through collections and exhibitions of memorabilia and memories
Follow the Yellow Brick Road: Memories:
Anticipation
By Simon Conway
Sense of anticipation, is how I remember those Golden Years.
Even during the Summer months, I used to peek through the crack in the Vicarage Road end doors, and think ahead to the glories to come.
Graham Taylor was everyones favourite uncle, and you knew he would take care of the team, the club, the media, and the results would always be right.
Before GT, WFC was only attracting 3000 gates in the 4th. Division. I loved to SIT on the terraces and gently doze my way through end of season games.
Then everything changed, it became EXCITING. Watford actually won matches - Repeatedly - and a magical journey unfolded.
I could not get enough. We beat Arsenal TWICE in 3 days in the 1st.Division. It really happened, and seemed NORMAL.
After GT, I still loved WFC but the sexiness was a lot less. We were great once, and the club is now living on 14000 gates and still 2 Divisions above the pre GT era.
At least I have brilliant memories- Put simply, you can't buy them. So Thank You GT from the bottom of my heart.
