The Museum of Watford is looking for local people to help create a new exhibition exploring the social history of silk and the lasting legacy of Watford's silk mills.

We are inviting residents, community members, creatives and history enthusiasts and anyone with a connection to Watford to work alongside the MOW team in uncovering and sharing the stories behind a remarkable material. Through personal memories, family histories and global connections, the exhibition will offer a fresh perspective on one of Watford's most important industries.

From the workers who powered the mills to the families. communities and landscapes they helped shape 'Fabric of Watford' will bring to life the human stories at the heart of the town's industrial heritage. 

​

Silk is more than just a fabric. It tells a story of work, migration, trade, faith and celebration. It connects local experiences to global histories and carries memories passed down through generations. By tracing silk's journey from the mill floor to the modern wardrobe, this exhibition will help explore how a single fibre helped weave together Watford's industry, people and place in the wider world.

What is 'co-curation'? 

Co-curation means creating an exhibition together. 

​

We believe the town's history is best told by lived experiences. Through co-curation, community members work alongside the MOW team to help develop exhibition themes, select stories and objects, and shape how these stories are shared with visitors.

What will you be doing? 

As part of the co-curation group, you will: 

​

• Explore the history of Watford's silk mills 

• Discover objects, photographs and archive materials 

• Share personal memories and family stories 

• Discuss whose stories should be represented 

• Help shape exhibition themes and content 

• Contribute ideas for displays, interpretation and visitor experiences 

• Have the opportunity to loan or donate objects for display in the exhibition

Who can apply? 

We welcome applications from: 

• Residents ​

• People with connections to Watford's silk mills 

• Family members of former mill workers 

• Members of community groups 

• Artists, makers and creatives 

• Young people and students 

• Local historians and researches 

• Anyone interested in Watford's heritage

No museum experience is required, just curiousity, enthusiasm and an interest in Watford's history.

Session dates

The co-curation programme will run from September 2026 - January 2027 and will include: 

One Saturday session each month (11am - 4pm) 

One evening session each month (5:30pm - 7:30pm) ​
