The People's Pattern

Join us for a unique Black History Month celebration where creativity, culture and community come together through the art of textiles.

The People's Pattern is an interactive, family-friendly workshop inviting people from all ages and backgrounds to help create a living tapestry that reflects the rich diversity of Watford. Through colour, pattern and storytelling, you'll have the chance to contribute your own piece to a growing community artwork that celebrates heritage, identity and connection.

Friday 23 October 2026

11am to 4pm

The Harlequin, Watford

Free drop-in community event

Create your story

Using a plain fabric circle, you'll design a pattern inspired by your own story, whether that's your family, neighbourhood, cultural heritage, travels, experiences or the people who shape your life.

On the reverse of your fabric piece, you'll be invited to share a few words about what your design means to you. Your contribution will then become part of a collaborative tapestry that represents that many stories, cultures and experiences that make Watford unique.

The tapestry will continue to grow over time and will be suitable for display across Watford's libraries, community centres, creating a lasting legacy of pride and cultural understanding.

Discover the stories behind the patterns

Alongside the craft workshop, visitors can explore an interactive heritage display that celebrates the history and significance of textiles around the world. Learn about:

  • The origins and production of African and Caribbean textiles

  • Traditional fabrics including Kente cloth, Adinkra symbols and Ankara prints

  • Historic trade routes that helped textiles travel and influence cultures across the globe

  • The continuing role of fabric and pattern in fashion, identity and celebration

  • How textile traditions connect communities worldwide, from Afro-Caribbean prints to tartans, Banarasi fabrics and traditional block prints
