In partnership with the guided walk app TrailTale, we are providing free, self-guided walking audio tours to take you on a journey through Watford’s rich heritage, uncovering fascinating stories, historic buildings, and cultural landmarks that have shaped the town over the centuries.

Designed to help you get your 10,000 steps in, it’s a rewarding way to connect with Watford’s past, whether you’re a curious resident or a first-time visitor.

What to expect

The TrailTale mobile app features over 140 historic routes across the UK. Our five Watford trails includes a blend of historic photographs, engaging facts, and accessible storytelling, helping to bring the town’s past to life in a fresh and interactive way.

As part of the experience, the trail also features content from our ‘100 People Who Made Watford’ project, short stories celebrating individuals who have played a significant role in shaping the town’s identity and community.

A new way to connect with Watford's past

This initiative forms part of our wider efforts to reimagine heritage in Watford, using digital tools to bring stories to life and connect them to our modern-day communities.

It also supports our priorities to:

  • Nurture interest in Watford’s unique history

  • Celebrate the town’s cultural heritage and key figures

  • Promote healthy, active lifestyles through walking

  • Increase footfall and support local businesses

How to access the trail

  • Download the free TrailTale app from your app store

  • Open the app and search for ‘Watford’

  • Select one of five trails: Watford Heritage Trail Town Centre, Watford Heritage Trail 2, Watford Heritage Trail 3, River Colne North and River Colne South

  • Begin exploring!
